I’m sharing some mixed media today! Instead of just linking you to three blogs, I’m sharing a YouTube video (originally from HBO), a major media article, and a podcast. It’s nice to mix things up sometimes, isn’t it?
Retirement Plans
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Some people really like John Oliver, others don’t. If you are a don’t, try to ignore that for 21:29 minutes because this is a really good video that everybody should see.
Pretty much every day, I see somebody on a personal finance forum try to justify why their very high fee retirement plan is better than a low fee plan. This is not backed up by research. Don’t get me wrong – there are times when it’s worth it to pay for financial help. But investing in high fee products usually isn’t one of them.
Don’t believe me? Ask the cat.
Dying At Your Desk Is Not A Retirement Plan
Washington Post – June 15, 2018
Another personal finance blogger retired this week, and he was featured by the Washington Post. There is nothing particular revolutionary about his story – he just saved a respectable (but not huge) amount for 33 years.
That’s the thing. At the end of the day, all of this personal finance stuff comes down to math. There is a layer that people have to push through – fending off wants, beliefs that they deserve to treat themselves before saving money, lack of financial education – but once people get through that, it’s rather simple.
(I purposely left low wages & disabilities out of that, because those things are on a complete different level than the three I listed above)
A lot of the major media pieces on early retirement tend to sensationalize the story and leave out major aspects of the person’s plan. This story isn’t like that. It’s just a logical walk through some things to consider and how to get from point A to point B.
And to Fritz – congrats!
