How should you invest for the short term?

Actuary on FIRE โ€“ March 27, 2018

Okayโ€ฆI realize not everybody will like this post. But my nerdy heart and brain loves it!

Actuary on FIRE has been doing something not too many in the personal finance sphere risk doing โ€“ getting all kinds of technical/mathematic/nerdy. And while not everybody likes that, I really appreciate it. I like numbers. I like evidence. And I like somebody laying out statistical probabilities.

I also think that people shouldnโ€™t invest in equities if they are looking at a short time horizon (less than 5 years) but Iโ€™ve always thought that because of the behavioral finance reasons, not because I saw any proof of it. That is, I always figured itโ€™d be financially okay most of the time but in the rare event that it turned out to be a bad financial decision, I thought the pain of losing would be worse than the gain of having higher returns over just a couple years. While I still think thatโ€™s true, now I have another argument to support my opinion!

That said โ€“ just stick with cash and cash equivalents for the short term*, okay?

*but pay attention to the caveat Actuary on FIRE lists at the bottom of the post.

7 TED Talks To Watch To Reset Your Money Mindset

Personal Finance Junkie โ€“ March 26, 2018

Sometimes you just donโ€™t have the time or ability to sit down and read, amiright? When that happens, maybe you can watch a TED Talk.

Iโ€™m a big fan of TED Talks. I listen to the TED Radio Hour podcast and I like to watch videos while Iโ€™m washing my face and brushing my teeth in the morning and evening. Itโ€™s a great time to multitask. Plus, Iโ€™ve noticed I brush my teeth longer when I have something distracting me, so itโ€™s good for oral hygiene too!

I confess I havenโ€™t had time to watch all of these yet, but Iโ€™ve watched several of them. And a number of people have told me lately that they learn better from hearing than reading, so this is for you guys. But really it’s for everybody, because who doesnโ€™t love a good TED Talk? Enjoy!

Introducing the ZipAll

REI โ€“ March 31, 2018

I’ve talked before about my love of REI (mostly the Garage Sale) and also how I’m interested in backpacking. Well, REI has come up with a genius idea for the perfect hiking outfit that can be used in any weather.

Snowy and cold? This thing comes with full length sleeves, pants, gloves, and a fur-lined hood. Hot day? No worries – zip off the parts you don’t need and have a lightweight and breezy outfit in no time.

Oh yeah – Happy April Fools Day! Watch the video if you didn’t already. It’s worth a couple minutes to see the different permutations of the outfit.

Seriously though, I think that ZipAll idea could work with a different fabric…๐Ÿค”
