30-day challenge: close your eyes and really listen to one piece of music each day

Wantless – February 3, 2018

Work was crazy last week. And the week before. So crazy that a coworker saw me, head in hands while a song was playing, and thought I hated music. Um…no.

I needed a way to decompress after a few hard weeks. This is a great method.

I decided to start with Billie Holiday’s version of the song discussed in this post. There’s nothing quite like closing your eyes and listening to Billie Holiday on a Sunday morning. In fact, I liked it so much that I sat through two more songs. Just…sat. And listened. That was nice. I think I’ll keep this up for awhile.

150 Proven Ways to Save Money

PF Geeks – January 24, 2018

Fun Fact: before I started this blog, I put together a presentation for a group I’m in about ways to save money that they maybe hadn’t thought about.

It turns out, most people don’t want to spend all of their money. They want to save money, a lot of people just don’t know how to do it. That’s where lists like this come in.

You’re probably going to see some stuff that seems really obvious. That’s okay, keep looking. In a list of 150 ways to save money, you’re bound to see something you didn’t expect.

And stick around next week, when I’ll be posting a method that saves me money on eating out!

Money story: Our financial 180

Get Rich Slowly – February 4, 2018

My financial story is not quite the normal one. Though I did go through a period of debt and “normal” spending, I got out of that cycle pretty quickly. That’s why I haven’t told my financial story yet – it doesn’t have quite the zing so many have these days (although I did pay off a whole lot of debt in just a few years).

Instead, check out this story from Joel at FI180.com. It includes all the elements so many people think they can’t escape – over the top spending, a feeling of “we deserve it”, unhappiness at work.

But Joel and his wife turned it around. They had a monumental change in mindset and associated spending. They tracked their progress. And they ended up with enough wealth to retire in their early 30s (that’s completely optional).

If you are looking for some motivation to make a change in your financial life, check out this post.

My life is ridiculously and suddenly A Lot right about now, so I love the idea of sitting and actually listening to music. I spend a lot of time with podcasts on in the background while I’m doing things, and I have playlists I listen to when I’m working, but I can’t say I’m paying super close attention to those. I’m going to start doing this for the rest of the month.

Same on the financial story—I’m dead boring. I’ll be happy when I’m finally debt-free but it won’t be a sexy debt payoff story by any means, and (luckily) I haven’t made huge mistakes so far. Oh well, I guess boring is good!

I’m starting to think more people should write those boring stories, actually. That’s probably what most people are actually going to do, right? So they need a mentor for that path. Most people aren’t going to pay off $183,000 in 3 weeks!
