Summary Sunday for January 28th, 2018

January 28, 2018 MilitaryDollar 2 Comments

Today’s Summary Sunday includes an analysis of a popular debt payoff strategy, a popular post on women personal finance writers, and a way to see the year’s most popular movies. Apparently I went with a popularity theme without even realizing it!

Pros and Cons of the Debt Snowball

Better Credit Blog – January 23, 2018

I’m working on a post about what I’d change about Dave Ramsey’s advice. He’s got some good points, but also some less good ones.

In the meantime, check out this post about debt snowballs, a debt payoff strategy popularized by Dave Ramsey. It touches on the reasons why the snowball works, but also talks about other methods that offer other benefits.

Meet The Women Of The Financial Independence Movement

Tread Lightly Retire Early – January 18, 2018

This post has taken the personal finance sphere by storm. There is a false truism in personal finance writing that the field is dominated by men. Furthermore, when people ask for names in the Financial Independence corner, the list is almost if not entirely male. It’s become something of a joke in the community – “Seriously? You can’t think of a single woman? Here’s a list of 10.”

Approximately half of my readers are female, but if you aren’t, don’t let that deter you. This list includes real estate mavens, single income breadwinners, award winning authors, and financial industry insiders. There is something for everyone in this list.

Here’s How You Can See 9 Oscar-Nominated Films For Just $4 Each

The Penny Hoarder – January 25, 2018

Do you really, really, really like movies? Especially going to the theater? Then here’s a deal for you.

Regal and Cinemark Theaters are each offering limited showings of this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees. You can see all 9 movies for only $35, which means each one is only $3.89 each. If you like watching movies in the theater, that’s a pretty great deal. The matinee price at my local Regal cinema is something like $11!

I’ve only seen one of these films so far but I want to see at least 5 more of them, so I’m strongly considering getting this. The showings are very limited, so you need to look at the schedule ahead of time to see if it works for you. I might see if I can make a day of it with a friend or two and watch 3-4 movies in a single day. If I do that twice, the price will be well worth it.

And if you think this idea is ridiculous and just want to rent one movie from Redbox, then might I recommend Dunkirk? The story and cinematography are breathtaking.
