How Much Should I Have In My 401(K)?

Mustard Seed Money โ€“ August 28, 2017

In this post, Mustard Seed Money examines the results of a Vanguard report about retirement account saving and looks at the โ€œaverageโ€ and โ€œmedianโ€ American.

The amount of money you set aside for retirement can have a significant impact on when, and if, you are able to retire. Even if Social Security is still around in 30, 40, or 50 years, it was never meant to supply 100% of peopleโ€™s retirement income needs. The rest of your retirement income needs to come from you. That may mean passive or residual income from work or rental properties, but for many people it means having a large investment portfolio.

The Economic Strategies of Disney Princesses

Bitches Get Riches โ€“ September 21, 2017

Some of you know that I was at Walt Disney World over the last 1.5 weeks. Iโ€™ve been saving this post by BGR so I could recommend it closer to my trip. Language warning: this is a little less swear-y than a normal BGR post, but itโ€™s not the dictionary, either.

This one is mainly just a fun read, but has some good lessons in it. Also, itโ€™s always fun to read about Ariel and her stupid 16 year old mistakes. On the trip I had to explain the story to my buddyโ€™s father, who had never seen The Little Mermaid. Can we all agree Ariel should not be a role model for anyone, financially or otherwise?

Favorite line: โ€œMaybe it was a mistake to dissect the economics ofย a movie that features a lounge act by a womanizingย candelabrum.โ€

The Fairer Cents Podcast

This isnโ€™t something to read, and Iโ€™m not recommending a certain episode because this is a new podcast. But if you are looking for another podcast to listen to, try out The Fairer Cents. If youโ€™ve never listened to a podcast, get on that because they are awesome!

The Fairer Cents is a new money podcast brought to you by Kara of Bravely Go and Tanja of Our Next Life. This is not the typical money podcast that brings on experts to discuss financial terms. If you want those podcasts, they are out there (I can make some recommendations). Instead, The Fairer Cents is trying to bring in more diverse voices, at all stages of their financial journey, to talk about all manner of financial issues.

Itโ€™s something new, and different, and I hope you give it a listen.
