SUMMARY SUNDAY IS A WEEKLY POST WHERE I PUT OUT A SHORT LIST OF THE PERSONAL FINANCE BLOG POSTS AND ARTICLES I LIKED THE MOST THROUGHOUT THE PREVIOUS WEEK. LINKS TO EACH POST ARE IN THE HEADERS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM TOO!
The FIRE Drill Podcast
Gwen from Fiery Millennials and J from Millennial Boss
This is a brand new (just went live this week) podcast about the FIRE community. I’ve already listened to the first 4 episodes and subscribed. Sadly, I will have to figure out another podcast to unsubscribe to since I am already way over the amount of podcast hours I can actually listen to in a week. It’s probably going to be a TED Talks one. Bummer.
Anyway, I highly recommend you check this out. If you are in the FIRE community, it will provide you exposure to some others you may not know about. If you are not in the FIRE community, it may just motivate you!
Also….why aren’t you in the FIRE community yet? You should get on that. It’s the best!
Thrashing the Early Retirement Threshhold
Fiery Millennials – August 29, 2017
Speaking of Gwen and early retirement, check out this article about peer pressure, societal norms, and FIRE. Do you think FIRE isn’t possible or worth pursuing because you actually don’t want to be financially independent? Or does it just seem too “outside the norm?”
Personally, I have had innumerous people tell me that my FIRE dreams are completely impractical. The fact that I’m working towards a pension that should cover 100% of expenses doesn’t matter. The fact that I’ve been saving 40-50+% of my paycheck for years doesn’t matter. And the fact that there are thousands of people who do this every year doesn’t seem to matter. These people have decided FIRE is a pipe dream, and I’m crazy for thinking otherwise.
Le sigh.
Financial Independence and Your Life’s Purpose
Two Cents Together – August 29, 2017
Continuing on that theme of financial independence, we have this one from Jamie at Two Cents Together. Jamie talks about how financial independence allows the freedom to pursue our life’s purpose. A lot of people misunderstand FIRE as “wanting to be rich” (ha! no) or “being lazy” (double ha! double no!). That’s not it at all.
What’s my ikigai (you’ll have to read Jamie’s post to understand that)? It’s been clear to me for years, although the way I accomplish it changes occasionally. My ikigai is to help people. It’s why I’m in the military…why I wrote a business plan for a non-profit years before it would be possible…why I write this blog.
(Oh, and hey, Two Cents Together – nice theme!)
