SUMMARY SUNDAY IS A WEEKLY POST WHERE I PUT OUT A SHORT LIST OF THE PERSONAL FINANCE BLOG POSTS AND ARTICLES I LIKED THE MOST THROUGHOUT THE PREVIOUS WEEK. LINKS TO EACH POST ARE IN THE HEADERS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM TOO!
Today’s Summary Sunday is a little bit different. Instead of blogs, today I’m going to introduce you to a few personal finance podcasts I’ve been listening to lately.
Not a podcast listener? I highly recommend them! I started listening to podcasts in January 2016 and I can’t believe I didn’t learn about them earlier. There are podcasts available in every genre you can imagine. Fiction, politics, kid-friendly, science, fashion, true crime, sports, anything you might be interested in. I love them because I can easily listen while on my commute, shopping, working out, etc. It has even replaced some of my TV watching.
I have an iPhone, and I listen through the Podcasts app. If you don’t have an iPhone, or want to listen another way, this article breaks down everything you need to know. It’s a bit out of date and there are a couple new methods (like the NPR One app) but it’s enough information to get you started.
Choose FI
Choose FI is changing how I think about my FIRE planning. I have a decent grasp on personal finance, but a lot of the normal stuff doesn’t apply if you are looking at financial independence/retiring early. Luckily, resources like Choose FI exist.
If you need an episode to get started, I recommend one of the most recent, Episode 028: Order of Operations. This episode talks about the order in which you should utilize investing methods if you are pursuing FIRE, which can be different from how someone else might do it. The big piece is Roth IRAs. You’ll usually hear that you should max out your Roth IRA if it’s an option. But it might not be the right choice for early retirees. Definitely check it out – it is making me rethink my entire strategy.
I also HIGHLY recommend Episode 009 if you are interested in travel hacking. After listening to this episode I got really motivated, and I’m planning my strategy for running the Chase Gauntlet they advocate. I’ll keep the blog updated as I go down this path – it should make for an interesting experience!
Choose FI also posts articles, so if you prefer the written word (which can convey the information faster) there is that option too.
Stacking Benjamins
I discovered Stacking Benjamins very recently, so I’m still digging through the archives. But right from the start, they had me hooked. The group is funny, they have great guests, and they seem to really know their stuff.
Another thing I love is that the group doesn’t always agree with one another. You will hear different perspectives, which I appreciate because as you know – Personal Finance Is Personal!
They are also SMART. Joe is a former financial advisor, OG is a Certified Financial Planner, and the rest are regular folks who have spent years researching and writing about money and finance.
Paula Pant is probably my favorite – I’ve been a looooooooong time fan of hers! She has her own blog and podcast too, both named Afford Anything. If you want to combine personal finance, FIRE, and real estate investing in one location, check her out! I’m not featuring her today because I’ve only listened to a few of her episodes so far, but I’ve been reading her blog for years.
Bigger Pockets
While Bigger Pockets doesn’t exactly fit into the “personal finance podcasts” category, it’s definitely related. You will hear from a lot of guests who have built their fortunes using real estate. And a lot of the FIRE community swears by real estate investing as a great way to increase their income streams. While I clearly am focused more on stock marketing investing, I’m fascinated by real estate investing.
Confession: while my rental property has been a great thing for me financially, I don’t love it. Being a landlord can be annoying! So I’m trying to learn more about ways to pursue real estate investing while making it easier on myself. Bigger Pockets is a big part of that. They certainly aren’t the only real estate investing podcast (there are dozens), but I like them the best so far.
In addition to the podcast and a blog, Bigger Pockets also has an online forum that is building a large community of real estate investors. I haven’t joined yet, but I’ve been checking it out. They also have a ton of resources to help you figure out whether a real estate deal makes sense.
Military Members: there is even a forum board dedicated to military investing. Check it out: https://www.biggerpockets.com/forums/834-military-investing.
