Summary Sunday

SUMMARY SUNDAY IS A WEEKLY POST WHERE I PUT OUT A SHORT LIST OF THE PERSONAL FINANCE BLOG POSTS AND ARTICLES I LIKED THE MOST THROUGHOUT THE PREVIOUS WEEK. LINKS TO EACH POST ARE IN THE HEADERS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THEM TOO!

Today’s Summary Sunday is all about FOOD! Whether you are eating out or staying in, here are some great posts on keeping food affordable.

Feeling Ripped Off At The Restaurant? CMO Investigates

Chief Mom Officer – June 16, 2017

Everybody knows that cooking at home is cheaper than going to a restaurant. I mean, I guess you could burn down the kitchen. That would be expensive. But mostly, cooking at home is going to save you some money.

In this post, the Chief Mom Officer cooked her family a fancy-pants weekend brunch and compared it to the cost of a local diner. You will not be surprised to find out the cost of cooking at home was many times less than the cost of going out. I’m certainly not suggesting you stop eating out – I eat out a lot because I love trying new things. But if you are going to go to a restaurant, think about which ones provide the most value. Breakfast is cheap and easy at home, but I can’t replicate an entire Vegas buffet in my kitchen. And I’ve never in my life been able to cook a steak that tastes as good as a restaurant steak. So I’ll save my pennies for the meals that I can’t replicate well at home. And I’ll save my dollars by eating Cheerios for most breakfasts at home, because frankly, I love me some Cheerios. What can I say? They’re delicious. My dog loves them too!

30 Copycat Starbucks Recipes

Frugal Millennial – May 3, 2017

You may have heard that you can get rich if you simply don’t buy $5 worth of lattes each day. Well, it’s not actually that easy, though it’s a start.

But sometimes you really want that amazing taste you can’t get at home, right? Well, maybe you can get it at home. There are tons of websites out there with copycat restaurant recipes. This post from Frugal Millennial has a bunch of Starbucks recipes to save on your triple-shot-half-cream-super-sprinkle-mocha-chaca-latte.

(I don’t drink coffee. Did I say that right?)

Anyway, some of these sound delicious. I have no idea what a birthday cake frappuccino is, but I do love me some cake. And though I don’t drink at Starbucks often, I love their hot chai lattes. Unfortunately the only chai latte recipe on this list is for iced, but I’ve found the Café Escapes Chai Latte k-cups to be a perfect substitute for only 75 cents each. You don’t even need the machine, just open the foil top and mix with hot water!

7 Super Simple Ways To Save At Chipotle

Penny Thots – June 13, 2017

But if you really, really want to go out to eat, you can try this.

I super love Chipotle. If I could eat it every day without gaining a ton of weight, I would. And it would be delicious.  I’ve known for a long time that you can stretch one Chipotle meal into 2 regular meals, but it wasn’t until about a year ago that I learned to “Chipotle hack.” I’ve been using three of the recommendations in this list (#1, #4, and #5) for awhile. I’m excited to use #3 the next time I’m there! Which may be today, because now I want Chipotle.

What are some of your favorite ways to save money on food?

Thanks for featuring me! Ironically, my two year old is eating Cheerios right now. 🙂 I’m with you on the only restaurant meals that are “worth it” to me are things I can’t easily make at home. It drives me crazy when my kids get 50 cents worth of mac n cheese for $5. Ugh!
